Prozac (fluoxetine) belongs to the group of antidepressants known as SSRIs (Selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors) and is probably the most well known of all the anti-depressants.

It is used to treat depression and OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)

Side Effects

The side-effects of Prozac include drowsiness, stomach upset, diarrhoea, dry mouth, dizziness, trouble sleeping and unusual dreams, sweating and changes in vision, although most of these should diminish over time.

There is also the possibility of ulcer-like symptoms in some sensitive individuals.

A lowered sex drive is also a common side effect of this, as with most antidepressants. If you experience any unusual symptoms or are concerned about side effects in anyway, it is important that you discuss this with your doctor or consult a pharmacist for advice. Usually these will not be anything to worry about, but best to be sure.

Dosage

The usual adult dose of Prozac is 20mg per day and this should be taken with a full glass of water.

Warnings

Prozac can interact with the MAOIs and so you should not start taking Prozac until two weeks after you have been taking any of the MAOIs. Nor should you start taking a MAOI until 5 weeks after you have stopped taking Prozac. As always, check with your doctor before changing any medications.

Some people may experience dizziness and anxiety when stopping Prozac. It is a good idea to gradually reduce the dosage and/or frequency first. It is important that you let your doctor know about any other medication you are taking, or condition you may have, so that they can consider this when prescribing antidepressants for you.
